ICARS was initiated by the Danish government in dialogue with the World Bank and was formally established as a self-governing international institution in November 2021.
Guided by a global Board of Directors, ICARS works in partnership with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to address Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
A central strategic aim is to engage countries, foundations, and organisations in advancing this mission, building on the founding support of Denmark.
The Board of Directors serves as the highest governing body at ICARS. It is made up of experts with diverse backgrounds in management, global health, One Health, and AMR. The Board is responsible for guiding ICARS’ strategic direction and overseeing financial and operational matters.
The Board’s expertise supports ICARS in fulfilling its mission effectively
Day-to-day management is led by the Executive Management team, which includes the Executive Director, Director of Science, and Director of Operations.
ICARS’ team consists of over 40 professionals from more than 20 countries. They work both from the Copenhagen headquarters and remotely as independent consultants worldwide. The team is expected to grow as ICARS expands its projects and activities.
Established in autumn 2020, the Technical Advisory Forum offers scientific and expert advice to ICARS. Members are selected based on ICARS’ evolving scientific needs and serve two-year terms. They review project proposals from partner LMICs and provide guidance on ICARS’ intervention and implementation research initiatives.
TAF brings together leading experts from human, animal, and environmental health fields, taking a multidisciplinary approach.
Partnership is essential to achieving ICARS’ goals. Each partner brings unique strengths that help address the challenges of AMR and drug-resistant infections in LMICs, across the One Health framework.
Together with the Danish Government, ICARS invites countries, foundations, and organisations to become Strategic Funding Partners, Funding Partners, or Mission Partners.
