2024 was a pivotal year in the global response to antimicrobial resistance and for ICARS.
The ICARS-supported project portfolio grew to 55 projects in 25 countries and territories, including 7 new projects approved in Cambodia (2 projects), Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Kenya and Tunisia. Furthermore, in 2024, ICARS launched four Requests for Proposals to explore AMR’s intersection with environmental dimensions, climate change, vaccines and sustainability strategies.
As a maturing organisation, with some projects reaching completion, many promising results are emerging, which demonstrate ICARS’ strong position to facilitate the bridging of policy and research. This report contains encouraging preliminary results from Colombia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Zambia.
In 2024, ICARS’ advocacy efforts accelerated through active participation in national, regional and global dialogues surrounding the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR, co-hosting multiple high-level side events, and receiving recognition in both the G7 and G20 health declarations.
Furthermore, ICARS launched several new capacity-strengthening initiatives, including supporting country-teams to attend and lead antimicrobial stewardship training, launching a Community of Practice, and hosting a gender and equity workshop in Bangkok.
In addition, the ICARS network of partners grew substantially, with six new Mission Partners, the launch of a five-year collaboration with C-CAMP, funding received from the UK Department of Health and Social Care, and the expansion of ICARS’ existing partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Center.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain focused on delivering context-specific, country-owned solutions in partnership with low- and middle-income countries.
